JANICE CORMIER

Janice Cormier is a ceramic artist born in New Brunswick (1970), now based in Montreal, Quebec, her practice is deeply rooted in a personal and evolving connection to the earth and its landscape. Having lived and worked in regions such as Atlantic Canada, Northen California and Quebec, she draws direct inspiration from the environments she has called home. Although she originally studied social sciences, she later turned to clay, discovering a passion for ceramics only after completing her studies. Largely self-taught, she developed her skills through experimentations, mentorships, and training. Her work is defined by organic, earth-driven forms that reflect the textures and rhythms of natural environments. She often uses raw and minimally processed material such as clay, rocks, shells, wood ash and other forged or found elements, allowing the materials themselves to guide the outcome. Many of her pieces remain as naked clay, sometimes enhanced with slips or natural inclusions that emphasizes their raw and tactile quality. This material reinforces her connection between her sculptures and the earth, making the process feel natural rather than purely artistic. Her work evokes a sense of place, memory and transformation, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with nature and the environments they inhabit.
